CrossOver is an App that allows you to run Windows programs on non-Windows platforms. The CrossOver developers are now bringing this functionality to Android smartphones/tablets and Chromebooks. According to the CrossOver team the beta version that will be available in the Google Play Store tomorrow, however, you can join them for a technical preview version and help them test out the Apps. CrossOver Technical Preview App will allow you to run programs designed to be installed and run in a Windows system on Android devices and Chromebooks. CrossOver basically emulates the Windows interface on your favorite mobile devices. You can run multiple apps simultaneously just as you can in Windows, and you can even use Windows apps alongside native Android apps without issue. The developers are making this early stage version of their application available to users primarily so they can get feedback on how to proceed with development. According to the developers, CrossOver for Android now works only with Intel-based Android devices and Chromebooks, which are increasingly few and far between since Intel has essentially backed out of the mobile game. Remember, will NOT run on an ARM-based device, so it is best to test it out on Chromebooks as of now. The CrossOver Android app uses the same concept (and software platform) as WINE. If you use Linux or Mac OS X, you’ll probably have crossed paths with WINE on those times that you need a Linux or Mac version of a Windows program and there just is none. The solution is to emulate it via WINE emulator. The CrossOver Android app works under these same concepts. Currently the Tech Preview is only available to users who signed up for initial access. The developers warn the App beta testers not to expect too much from tech preview as of yet.
