Khanna’s application, called Marauder’s Map, a Chrome extension was released in May that used Facebook Messenger data to indicate where your friends were when they sent messages. The app also showed precise locations of strangers involved in a group chat who were within three feet of the app. This meant that Khanna and the strangers could ideally see the locations from where they are messaging each other. The location of the users was automatically shared by the Facebook Messenger app with anyone whom the user messaged....

Back then, Facebook had announced in a blog post dated March 21, 2019 that passwords were left in a “readable format”, which allowed at least 2,000 Facebook engineers and developers with access to the company’s internal systems to view the actual plain text passwords. “This caught our attention because our login systems are designed to mask passwords using techniques that make them unreadable. How does this Facebook bug work: The bug discovered by Melamed is similar to another bug made public by a security researcher, Pranav Hivarekar. Hivarekar had discovered a way to attach theFacebook victim’s video to a comment in order to delete it. In order to exploit this vulnerability, Melamed first created a public event on the Facebook page and uploaded a video on the Discussion part of the event. While uploading the video, Melamed tampered with the POST request and replaced the Video ID value on his video with the Video ID value of any other video on the social media platform....

In a civil complaint filed with a federal court in San Francisco, California on April 9, the social media giant has accused Basant Gajjar, the creator of “LeadCloak” cloaking software. Gajjar has been accused of using the LeadCloak software to violate Facebook Terms and Policies by providing cloaking software and services designed to circumvent automated ad review systems and ultimately run deceptive ads on Facebook and Instagram. “[Gaijar’s] cloaking services were used to promote, among other things, deceptive diet pills and pharmaceuticals, cryptocurrency investment scams, and even misinformation about the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Facebook alleges in the complaint....
