After the takeover of its mobile devices division by Microsoft, the Finnish-based technology company can re-enter the smartphone market only after 2016, as per their agreement. Once Nokia’s contract with Microsoft ends, the company can sell smartphones that do not run on the Windows Mobile platform and it would be free to launch its own Android-powered smartphones.

A bunch of leaked images that have surfaced online recently hint that the company has already started to work on an Android-powered smartphone, dubbed the Nokia C1. Reportedly, the company is carrying on discussions with Chinese smartphone-tablet maker Foxconn for building its first Android smartphone.

According to the leaked specs, the Nokia C1 Android smartphone features a 5-inch FHD display and is powered by an Intel Atom processor, coupled with 2GB of RAM. The Nokia C1 will sport an 8-megapixel rear camera with its flash positioned just below the lens, along with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Nokia’s new handset will offer 32GB of in-built storage and will run on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system. The leaked images of the Nokia C1 handset also hint that the handset is sleek with rounded corners and an excellent screen-to-body size ratio along with on-screen navigation buttons. The handset’s design seems to be similar to the Nokia N1 tablet released this year, but it is smaller in size. It also shows an iPhone-esque speaker grille and an expected USB Type C port at the bottom, keeping in line with the Nokia N1 tablet. Going by the release date of N1 tablet last year which was November 18, there are rumors that Nokia could launch its first Android smartphone on the same date next year. However, there is no confirmation regarding the release date from Nokia. It is also speculated that Nokia may unveil the Nokia C1 Android smartphone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in March 2016.
